WNCC Hosts Open House and Inaugural Trades Block Party

April 11, 2018
Paxton Gleason has dreams of owning his own welding shop someday.
The Wauneta-Palisade High School junior has always enjoyed working with his hands, and has a pair of welders in the family. So, in his search for post-high school welding training, Gleason has Western Nebraska Community College near the top of his list.

"WNCC is definitely on my radar," he said.

That interest brought Gleason and prospective students from around the area to the WNCC Scottsbluff Campus Wednesday for the Applied Tech Open House and Block Party. WNCC played host to nearly 150 area high school students during the day for an open house, and welcomed community members in the evening for a cookout and block party.

During the day, prospective students toured WNCC's Applied Technical Trades facilities and heard from each of the six programs, which include Applied Agriculture Technologies, Auto Body Technology, Automotive Technology, Aviation Maintenance, Powerline Construction and Maintenance Technology, and Welding Technology.

Gleason traveled nearly 200 miles from Wauneta to attend the event, because he wanted to see the WNCC's welding facilities and meet the instructor in person.

"I heard they have a good welding program and I wanted to go someplace good and someplace that's going to give me the training I'll need for the future," he said.

On top of meeting with WNCC instructors and students, Gleason and the rest of the prospective students in attendance had the opportunity to climb powerline poles, use a front-loading simulator, and see all the equipment used at WNCC.

"It was awesome," Gleason said. "I just thought the whole day was cool."
