What is Skills Free?
A new Nebraska financial aid program for low-income students who receive tuition assistance for non-credit courses that lead to jobs in high-demand fields. Skills Free is also available for those already employed, and can be used to enhance skills to achieve careeer advancement. 

Recieve high-quality hands-on training that results in industry-recognized credentials for students seeking new employment or job upgrans. Training is offered in a variety of skill areas.

Since non-credit programs are not eligible for federal financial aid, this program is designed to bridge the funding gap for individuals who meet program and income guidlines to complete short-term training programs.

Who is eligible?
Applicants must meet the following criteria to apply:
  • Family income is at or below 250% of the U.S. DHHS Income Poverty Guidelines (Visit U.S. DHHS Income Poverty Guidelines)
  • Resident of Nebraska
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a qualified alien under the Federal Immigration and Nationality Act
What is covered?
The Skills Free program is based on financial need. You may receive full or partial assistance with your direct training costs, including tuition, books, required fees and equipment.
  • Full partial tuition
  • Required books and equipment; i.e., welding jacket, steel-toed boots, gloves etc.
  • Industry testing fees
What courses are offered?
  • Commercial Driver's License "CDL" (upon availability)
  • Medical Assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Microsoft Office Applications
  • Welding
Application and selection process includes:
  • Applicants must complete an initial assessment to determine readiness to complete a Skills Free program
  • Print off and complete the Skills Free application
  • Meet with the Workforce Development Director, Doug Mader to discuss your training request
  • Eligibility to receive funding will be determined through an evaluation application and most recent tax return
Program requirements:
  • Maintain regular contact with the instructor of your program throughout the course
  • Sign necessary releases to provide relevant information to college faculty, if applicable
  • Attend all required class sessions
  • Complete survey when requested by WNCC upon completion of program
