Program Overview

The Criminal Justice emphasis area providesa broad academic and multi-disciplinary background that prepares him/her for professional careers in law enforcement, corrections, private security, court, parole, and probation. This program also provides students with an interdisciplinary curriculum that prepares him/her for advance studies.


  • Illustrate the inter-dependent operations of the three general criminal justice components - police, courts, and corrections
  • Demonstrate how criminal justice organizations function in relation to the political, legal and socioeconomic envrinoments in which they operate
  • Demonstrate basic qualitative and quantitative criminal justice research techniques, methodolgy, skills, and analysis
  • Summarize criminal law, constitutional law, and the law of criminal justice
  • Analyze criminological theories and their implication to contemporary criminal justice policies
  • Communicate, both orally and through writing, in a manner appropriate for criminal justice
  • Produce work that deomnstrates the ability to effectively search, read, and critically evaluate professional literature in criminal justice

Career Opportunities

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2014, the median pay in the criminal justice field was $58,630 per year for police and detectives. Growth in jobs for this field for the decade 2014-2024 was projected to be 4%, slower than average. (
