This Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, the Student Veterans Organization (SVO) at Western Nebraska Community College is dedicating a memorial to all fallen soldiers of the panhandle. The "Fallen Heroes Memorial," as it is named, is a large bronze casting of a pair of combat boots, rifle, and helmet, placed on a block of granite. The memorial will stand by the flagpole at the Main Building on the Scottsbluff Campus.
The dedication ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. and is open to the public. In addition to the memorial unveiling, there will be a wreath laying by Gold-Star mothers and fathers, an Army bugler, live music by WNCC students, and remarks by WNCC President Dr. Todd Holcomb and Congressman Adrian Smith. A reception will follow.
The Fallen Heroes Memorial has been a part of SVO's vision since shortly after the organization was founded in 2009. Recently, the following student organizations also joined the effort by donating a portion of their student fee allocations to the completion of the memorial: Circle K, Criminal Justice Club, Emerging Voices, Phi Theta Kappa (Lambda-Pi), Student Government, and United Leaders for Cultural Diversity.
WNCC is known nationally as a veteran-friendly school because our staff, students, and the communities we serve honor those who returned here after wearing our nation's uniform. Everyone in western Nebraska and beyond is invited to join us on May 27 at 10:00 a.m. to honor those who did not return.
