Annual District Music Contest Free to Public

WNCC

The NSAA 2014 District VI Music Contest will be held at Western Nebraska Community College Scottsbluff Campus on Thursday, April 24. Nearly 1000 vocal and instrumental musicians, representing 13 area school systems will compete for ratings throughout the day. Sharon Hoffman of Bayard is the contest coordinator; Rita Stinner and Dr. Nathaniel Johnson of the WNCC Music Program are the site coordinators. Participating schools include Banner County, Bayard, Bridgeport, Gering, Kimball, Leyton, Minatare, Mitchell, Morrill, Potter-Dix, Scottsbluff, Sidney, and Sioux County.

District contest will begin at 8:00 a.m.  All Choruses will perform in the Assembly of God Church; Concert Bands and Orchestra in the WNCC Little Theatre; Show Choirs in the Harms Advanced Technology Center Bay Area; and Jazz Bands in the HATC PLEX. Solos and small ensembles will perform in various classrooms across the WNCC Campus. The schedule of each school’s events will be posted liberally around campus, and can be viewed on the District Music Contest link at wncc.edu after April 16.

Thirteen judges representing Western Nebraska Community College, Scottsbluff, Mitchell, Alliance, Kimball, and Chadron State College in Nebraska, plus Torrington and Lusk WY will adjudicate this annual event.

Musicians compete for a rating based on a standard of musical excellence. A rating of (I) represents superior or outstanding work; (II) rating represents excellent work; (III) rating represents a good or average performance; (IV) indicates below average work; and a (V) rating indicates a poor performance. Award certificates are presented to those soloists, small ensembles, and large ensembles earning a superior rating. Plaques are awarded to large ensembles earning a unanimous superior rating from all three judges. One Outstanding Performance and two Honorable Mention Performance awards may be selected by each judge for solo and small ensemble excellence during the day.

The contest is free and open to the public. Concessions in Cougar Palace will be available throughout the day.
