WNCC Nursing Students Benefit from Service Learning

WNCC

Western Nebraska Community College students participating in the Associate Degree Nursing Program participate in an exciting service learning opportunity that provides them the opportunity to instruct and interact with children in elementary grade, after school programs.

“Their work provides a valuable service to children in our community as they educate elementary school students on some aspect of safety or health,” Nursing Program Instructor Ronda Kinsey tells us. Students form several teams to present at both Roosevelt and Westmoor Elementary School. One of these teams included nursing students Erin Gallaso, Monica Lehr, and Ashley Harmon. They chose to work with students at Westmoor with the subject of “Healthy Snacks.”

“The kids were great participants,” Monica Lehr tells us of her experience working with students ranging from six to 12 years of age. “The kids asked great questions, and we had to keep on our toes.”

Ashley Harmon agrees, adding, “It helped us learn a lot. It was a great experience presenting material to an age group we don’t normally work with.”

Each of these students is in the Associate Degree Nursing Program and eligible to complete the national licensing exam to become Registered Nurses (RN) following graduation in 2015. The demand for nurses in the workforce continues to grow in response to the healthcare needs of our changing population.
