Four veterans enrolled in the Western Nebraska Community College Aviation Program in Sidney each received a scholarship of $500 over a two-semester period. An award ceremony took place at the WNCC Sidney campus on October 30.
Alan Smith and Christopher Buckley each received WNCC TRIO Veterans Upward Bound Scholarships, funded by multiple donors in the community including one large donor who prefers to remain anonymous. Richard Weinmaster received the SPC James. R. Wolf Memorial Scholarship named in honor of Veterans Upward Bound Assistant Director Chris Wolf’s son. Paul Barnett received the Security First Bank Return Veterans Scholarship, with Loan Officer Mary Havorka in attendance for the presentation.
“I have enjoyed the challenges of college but honestly if it wasn't for the Department of Veterans Affairs and Chris Wolf, I would not have been in college,” says Veterans Upward Bound Scholarship awardee, Alan Smith. “Life is expensive and it is not going to get any better any time soon. I am proud to have served my country and I am proud to be a veteran, TRIO Veterans Upward Bound has helped me tremendously.”
“We are very grateful to our donors who provided the TRIO Veterans Upward Bound program with the opportunity to be able to award scholarships to these deserving veterans,” says Chris Wolf.
