Western Nebraska Community College Sidney Campus has received a $4000 grant from the Thomas D. Buckley Trust for the spring 2016 semester. This year, the college is distributing the grant to 10 students, with each student receiving $400. The students awarded are in a variety of programs including general studies, journalism, nursing, cosmetology, and business administration.
"The support that the Thomas D. Buckley Trust continues to show for WNCC students in Sidney is remarkable," says WNCC Financial Aid Director Sheila Johns. "These funds undoubtedly make a difference in the lives of our students, and we can't thank the Trust enough for their generous support."
The Thomas D. Buckley Trust is a private foundation created by Thomas D. Buckley, a man who spent most of his life as a farmer in Chappell until his death in 1979. According to the official website, the trust "funds programs mainly in the Western Panhandle of Nebraska and in extreme Northeast Colorado."
The first grant issued in 1981 assisted the City of Chappell in the purchase of an ambulance. The trust currently awards $20,000 annually to high school seniors graduating from Chappell, Lodgepole (now Creek Valley), Garden County, South Platte, Julesburg, and Revere schools, and an additional $10,000 for continuing education.
