On February 24 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Western Nebraska Community College nursing faculty hosted a career activity entitled See Yourself as a Nurse. Sixty students from the Scottsbluff and Gering High Schools attended. Nursing alumni and nurses from specialty areas spoke to the students about their journey to become a nurse. The specialty areas represented included nurse anesthetist, flight nurse, and nurse practitioner.
According to Nursing Education Faculty Member Rebecca Kautz, “Faculty were excited about the number of students in attendance and the interest in nursing as a career.”
After the speaker presentations, students visited skill labs where current practical and associate degree nursing students discussed intravenous therapy, nasogastric intubation, and tracheostomy care. The nursing students also showed high school students the department’s anatomy model collection and assisted them in listening to lung and heart sounds of a simulation mannequin. During the last part of the activity, students learned about the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
