Western Nebraska Community College ranked among the Top 25 best two-year colleges
in the United States for veterans, according to the 2015 ranking put out by Military
Times Magazine this week.
Over 600 colleges filled out a rigorous "Best for Vets" survey of over 100 questions
that demonstrates a tremendous array of services, special rules, accommodations, and
financial incentives offered to students with military ties. Colleges were also expected
to describe many aspects of veteran culture on their campus. Military Times evaluated
each school's responses based on what veterans have said are important to them, as
well as their editorial judgement. Military Times also factored in data from the Veterans
Affairs and Defense Departments, as well as three Education Department sources: the
IPEDS Data Center, College Scorecard data and the Cohort Default Rate Database.
"We are very proud to be included in the 'Best for Vets' listing this year," said
Military and Veterans Affairs Director Chris Wolf. "We feel we have a wonderful place
for veterans here at WNCC, and we are committed to providing veterans with the best
services that we can while they pursue their college education."
The Military and Veterans Affairs Office at WNCC serves as a resource center and welcomes
all military connected students and families. It also serves as the certification
site for Veterans Administration educational benefits including the Montgomery GI
Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation, Post-9/11 GI Bill, dependent benefits, National Guard
and Reservists, and the MyCAA program for spouses. Support services provided to veterans
include assistance with education benefits applications, college curriculum information
and academic advising in line with education benefits.
This is the sixth year Military Times has ranked colleges and universities relating
to veteran specific needs. In 2011, WNCC was voted the top "Best for Vets" community
college in the nation. For a full listing of "Best for Vets" schools, visit http://www.militarytimes.com/story/veterans/best-for-vets/2015/11/09/best-vets-colleges-2016-our-top-175-schools/75311832/.
