Western Nebraska Community College wrapped up its version of the weight-loss show
"The Biggest Loser" competition Monday, Feb. 29.
The college wide six-week event was open to all WNCC students, staff, and faculty.
Thirteen teams of two participated in the contest, won by Powerline Maintenance &
Construction instructor Ed Salazar and Bookstore and Cougar Den Director Rich Riddick,
who had a 20.09 percent weight loss and dropped 41 pounds.
"Rich helped in keeping me motivated with sharing his progress," said Salazar. "I
have wanted to lose some weight ever since my back and elbow surgeries. I put on about
30 pounds, so it was time to lose them and quit making excuses. That, or buy a lot
of new clothes!"
Riddick said he stayed motivated not only because he wanted to get to a healthier
weight, but also because he did not want to let his partner down.
The top three teams that lost the largest percentage of body weight received prizes
ranging from money, WNCC gift certificates, snacks and GNC products. The individual
who lost the most weight also received a prize.
Men's Basketball Coach Russ Beck and his wife Charity came in second with a total
loss of 30.2 pounds equaling a 16.54 percent weight loss.
Instructors Kail Bowman and Dave Nelson took third with a 42.6-pound weight loss,
a drop of 15.82 percent.
Dave Nelson also took home the individual prize with a weight loss of 34.6 pounds.
More than 170 pounds was lost during the competition.
WNCC Faculty member Amy Winters coordinated the event. "I think it's important to
have events like these to help build a sense of community," said Winters. "This event
helps raise awareness for our students and employees to live a healthier lifestyle.
It helps with motivation, and it's always fun to have a friendly competition."
