WNCC Hosts 2018 High School District Music Contest

WNCC
The 2018 Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) District VI Music Contest will be held at Western Nebraska Community College on Thursday, April 19.

Nearly 1,000 vocal and instrumental musicians, representing 12 area high school systems are competing for ratings throughout the day. Participating schools include Banner County, Bayard, Bridgeport, Gering, Kimball, Leyton, Minatare, Mitchell, Morrill, Potter-Dix, Scottsbluff,  and Sioux County.

District contest begins at 8 a.m. on the WNCC Scottsbluff Campus. All choruses perform in the Assembly of God church; concert bands and orchestra in the John N. Harms Center Plex and High Bay Theatre; show choirs in the Bishop Dining Hall; jazz bands in the Williams Building; and solo and small ensemble performances in various classrooms around WNCC's Scottsbluff Campus. The master schedule of events will be posted around campus.

Fourteen judges representing Bayard, Bridgeport, Chadron, Gering, Grand Island, Scottsbluff, and Sutherland in Nebraska, and Lusk, Pine Bluffs, and Torrington in Wyoming are adjudicating this annual event.

Musicians compete for a rating based on a standard of musical excellence. A rating of (I) represents superior or outstanding work; (II) represents excellent work; (III) represents a good or average performance; (IV) indicates below average work; and a (V) indicates a poor performance. Award certificates are presented to those solos, small ensembles, and large ensembles earning a superior rating. Plaques are awarded to large ensembles earning a unanimous superior rating from all three judges. One Outstanding Performance and two Honorable Mention Performance awards may be selected by each judge for solo and small ensemble excellence during the day.

The contest is free and open to the public. Concessions are available throughout the day in Cougar Palace.
