For the 10th straight year, Western Nebraska Community College will host a dance for
the community.
"People don't really get the chance to dance to a live jazz band in the valley, so
that's what we do," said Dr. Nathaniel Johnson, WNCC instrumental activities director.
WNCC's 10th annual Jump, Jive & Swing is scheduled for May 6 at the Gering Civic Center.
Doors open with live music and cocktails at 5:15 p.m. with the dance beginning around
6 p.m. Tickets are $20 apiece and can be purchased by visiting wnccfoundation.org
or calling 308-630-6550.
All tickets must be purchased by noon on Friday, May 4.
Performing at the event will be the Monumental Rock Combo, Fire in the Pan Swingers,
and the WNCC Jazz Combo. Each ensemble brings something different to the table, Johnson
said.
Monumental Rock Combo focuses primarily on modern rock, but will mix in some of the
more popular older music in the genre, as well.
"We've played Black Crowes, Blue Swede, Maroon 5, even Pink Floyd," Johnson said.
"Wait! There's a theme there. I guess we need to start learning some Deep Purple and
Red Hot Chili Peppers, and maybe some Black Sabbath."
The Fire in the Pan Swingers and WNCC Jazz Combo, however, resemble a typical jazz
band with plenty of traditional swing music.
"It's a variety offering of music that night," Johnson said. "There will be a lot
of music certainly."
In addition to music, heavy hors d'oeuvres will be also available all evening.
"So you can dance and get up and get some food, then dance, and get up and get some
more food," Johnson said. "It's very informal."
